Four experiences, one blog.

Oh wow I was going to post yesterday but I forgot sorry I’m a bad person.

But anyways. The last couple weeks of school were stressful and I was going through a whole bunch of stuff and school became to busy to really get on the internet at all. But I’ve been back home since Wednesday and I miss Chattanooga so much. Basically the food. I loved being able to walk or drive over to the dining hall and eat stuff that was already prepared for me. Now I have to wait to make things myself. College made me lazy. But finals are done and I’ve moved back home which is sad and things. IDK what else I’m supposed to write. YUP

Come on, you guys.

(I’m sorry if I sound mean, it’s hell week, I’m stressed.)

Would I change anything?

So this week we are talking about “things we wish we could change.” I’m going to talk about things I would change about my school generally, and my individual experience as well.

I absolutely love cornell but there are definitely aspects of it I would change if I could. Cornell is divided up into seven colleges and schools and each has their own set of requirements and classes and everything. I wish I could take more classes in varied disciplines, since most of my classes are communication classes or my specific college (agriculture and life sciences) requirements. Later on in my college career, I hope I’ll be able to fit in some more liberal arts classes.

I would also make it easier to switch majors in my specific school. In other schools, it’s a lot easier, but to switch in to the communication department, I have to take 6 core comm classes and then apply. Which means I won’t technically be a comm major until like 2013 :/

Socially, I would change a bunch of the new rules they put in place this year concerning the greek system. My official “dry” period just ended… with basically a month left in the semester, which has made it really difficult to socialize and get really acquainted with girls in my house and fraternities since we weren’t allowed to attend any “wet” events.

In terms of my individual experience, I wish I had found a roommate before school started instead of doing random selection. I know people who had a lot of luck with random selection, but I certainly did not. I wish I had used one of the facebook groups where people asked for roommates, one of those roommate-finding websites, or talked to friends of friends about rooming with people they knew coming here.

I also would have entered cornell as a comm major instead of biometry and statistics. It would have made things a lot easier and I think I would have been a lot happier last semester.

That’s all I would change, really. I’m really happy with cornell and my experience here, especially this semester, but I wouldn’t say that I don’t have any regrets or aspects of my college experience that I would alter.

Hope everyone’s having a great week!

I guess this week is “things we wish we could change” week?

So basically, I can count on my one hand the amount of people that I know that are absolutely enamored “the only thing they would change is the temperature of the orange juice” in love with their college. Which is not at all to say that most people don’t love or like their college in one way or another, but it’s hard to find people that are completely enamored with their school. Thus, this weeks discussion is things we wish we could change about our colleges.

Now, mine is kind of pathetic-ish, but yeah, I’m not head over heels in love with my school. I went into it loving almost nothing and have really grown to like my school, but it’s not always my perfect fantasy. I think if there would be two things that I would change about my school, it would be to make it nerdier and to make it more diverse.

I know, I know, they’re silly reasons. But while the nerdy (and not just the nerdfighter but literally just the nerdy) population exists, they’re harder to find. Don’t get me wrong - my friends are absolute dorks, and I love them. But you don’t have the general nerdy atmosphere that floats around giant groups of nerds, not usually. And also, my school is like 75% white, so it’s not that diverse. I mean, I’m in the GSA and stuff, but the school is pretty white and not extremely lgtbq and I don’t super have a problem with that but diversity is nice, you know? My high school was more diverse, so the difference is noticeable at times. Yeah.

Well fuck.

It seems to be a habit of mine to post on Saturday now and that’s bad and I’m sorry.

ANYWAY MONEY.

I’m really lucky in the sense that I have a partial scholarship and a summer job so I do have some extra spending money (also my parents are mad helpful). That doesn’t mean I don’t have to watch how much money I spend. Every weekend there’s a shuttle to Target (also various grocery stores and whatnot) and in the first few months we would go every week. I was so reckless with that now I barely go once every two months. So just let this be a lesson. Even if you have the opportunity and means to spend money, make a budget and stick to it.

It’s awesome because when I’m home I trick my parents into paying for things for me hehehehe. I actually end up spending more at home because I guess I have more opportunities for it? I’m not really sure.

Anyway, I had enough to see the HUNGER GAMES (good segway, alison) and it was amazing and beautiful and I’m wondering what other people thought of it.

hours of sleep last night: oh god 10 it was amazing
days gone since last load of laundry: 6?
tests/papers so far this semester: i think around 7 also a bunch of spanish quizzes.
plans for the weekend: I have a big biopsych test on Monday so a lot of it will be studying from here on out (but god knows I want to go out tonight)
something new I learned this week: Way too many people I am friends with haven’t read the hunger games which immediately resulted in a termination of friendship or them acquiring the books in some way.

Okay, so it’s not like I’ve been avoiding this, it’s just that I haven’t had time.

Right now I’m basically doing hell week, except I’m in orchestra so its not nearly as much work. But plus that I’ve had quizzes and tests and homework and I’ve been helping a friend deal with some stuff. And then I’ve been making my schedule for next semester. Which basically all depends on whether or not I pass this test that I have to take on Saturday. So nervous.

But yes, being broke. It sucks. I mean, my mocsbucks can buy me most things in the on campus convenience store, but that means I can’t ever go off campus for meals or things. I still do, but whatever. And I haven’t had milk in forever, which is sad. And my diet is basically pizza and chicken. So this week I went to give blood, so I had 2 hamburgers, and my body went into a shock from all the red meat. it was weird.

but anyways. I don’t have a job on campus. or off of campus. But I haven’t really needed anything besides shoes lately, and I went and bought some really expensive shoes that are really cute and should last forever. but that will be my last purchase off campus for a while. I have everything I need material-wise, and I only go off campus for food every once in a while.

plans for the weekend: The Gondoliers. and that test. Basically school stuff.
something new I learned this week: Sleep is for the weak, and apparently I’m weak. I keep taking naps and then I leave myself no time for homework, which makes me have to get up early to do homework, which makes me lose more sleep. I need a good, long weekend to just sleep.

wednesday!

this week we’re talking about what it’s like being college students and being…broke.

where college kids spend most of their pocket money, in my opinion, is going out, drinks, food, etc. in terms of food, i have “big red bucks” and meal swipes, so i don’t really spend that much money on food.

something that really keeps me from spending money is the fact that i go to school in the middle of no where. if i went to school in a city, or even a bigger town, i would be going out in the city/town more, shopping more, eating at restaurants more, etc. the fact that i’m primarily on campus all the time helps with the broke college student thing.

the only issue with that is when i come home, i’m all, “oh, i can do lots of shopping and see lots of movies and go out to eat because i never spend money at school…” but i’m working on it :P

unfortunately i don’t have any time to get a job right now, but i’m hoping that next year when i have a car on campus and it’ll be easier.

please let us know if you have any suggestions for themes!!!

broke college student week!

So I guess one of the “stereotypes” about college kids (it’s not really a stereotype, more of like a general thing) is that college kids are always broke. Which they may or may not be, depending on their life and if they may or may be backed by their parents and stuff. So this week we’re going to chat about ways we save money or whatever on campus.

I will honestly say that I don’t spend a lot of money, or at least not on a daily basis. I don’t usually carry around cash on me because whenever I get food it’s in my meal plan and that’s all on one swipe card so I don’t really worry about it. My swipe card also has this thing called “GoldPlus”, which basically turns it into a debit card for stuff on and around campus (lots of different schools have different versions of this). I use that even for my laundry, and I put on a bunch of money on that in the beginning of the year, so really I just use that.

I haven’t really left campus and needed to leave campus (besides when I went to see the midnight showing of the Hunger Games), so I don’t feel like I’m spending money a lot of the time, though whenever I do find myself at Rite Aid or CVS or something buying something I need I also sometimes find myself splurging a little and getting candy or something.

I do have a job on campus, at least sort of - I work for the sound crew, but the hours are very come-and-go, so I haven’t really been working much this semester due to other things. It is a source of money whenever I can get work, though, which is always nice.

(My friend B told me to add that when we went to see THG last weekend, I bought a large bucket of popcorn and then took that bucket home because they give you free refills with it. So if I ever go back, I can sneak the bucket in and get free refills or whatever. :D #tricks There’s a picture of me wearing that bucket on my head on my personal.)

hours of sleep last night: 5
days gone since last load of laundry: my laundry is actually in the dryer right now
tests/papers so far this semester: 3/4
plans for the weekend: Nothing planned yet… probably just hanging out with friends.
something new I learned this week: (I asked B for help… because I’m clueless): The Hunger Games didn’t suck.

HELLO. it’s been a while. I’m Ali.

just kidding, i’m unforgettable.

Anyway, here you see an example of a way I spend my time. Performing is a HUGE deal here so there have been lots of a capella performances. This is a video from one of them. I’ll try and get others up to my youtube channel at some point. I went to see the Vagina Monologues tonight as well! This also applies to stereotypes. One is that EVERYONE AT MY SCHOOL IS A THEATER MAJOR. We are big into theater and it’s hard to find someone who’s not involved in performing in some way but they do exist. Also, another stereotype is that everyone’s jewish. That’s basically true. It’s really cool. We have challah sold every Friday.

I haven’t seen the Hunger Games yet, though. That’s just a random sad fact about my life.

SEE Y’ALL ON THE FLIPSIDE.

HI HEY HELLO

I know it’s thursday morning.

Don’t tell anyone.

So our theme this week is like whaaat kind of a free for all so I’m gonna talk about how I’m currently on spring break.

Fun fact: I have not and will not go a day this break without seeing Cornell people, which is sort of funny.

Most of my friends don’t have this break, so I’ve been hanging out with school people who have been visiting or school friends who are also home friends. Yeah.

Other than seeing people, I’ve been decorating my paddle for my big (in my sorority), watching lots of TV, and shopping. oh and eating lots of yummy (free) food.

AND TONIGHT IS THE HUNGER GAMES PREMIERE AHHHHHHHHH I’m so excited. I’m seeing it with my future roommate Leah and our other friend Evan.  I’m beyond excited.

Okay, I think this is it. Good, great, perfect. Sorry I don’t have much to say this week (at least I’m posting for once!)
